The Landfill Directive was adopted by the EU in 1999, and brought into force in the UK on 15 June 2002 as the Landfill Regulations. Since then it has been enforced gradually, to give UK industry time to adapt. The aim of the Directive is to drastically change the way the UK handles waste.

The first requirement of the Directive is to classify waste into different categories, and restrict the dumping of certain types of waste into landfill sites - thus forcing industry to find alternative disposal routes.

In addition to this, landfill tax has been introduced. This tax is currently set at £32 per tonne. From now on it is set to increase by £8 per tonne per year every April - and these costs are before disposal and transport costs have been added on.

A site survey from Envirotech can provide advice on reducing waste and alternative disposal routes.
